Virtual Landline apps rely on your device's data connection to make VOIP calls over the internet. That's why we thought to offer you some guidance how to get the best out of the apps as it is unfair to expect them to work in the same way as your mobile unless you work within their limitations.
Everyone is used to poor quality mobile calls - there are places with really bad to no signal at all, and so you need to wait until you get a better area before attempting to speak to anyone. The same applies for your Wi-Fi or 4G/3G connection. In fact, more so to the extent that we cannot recommend the use of our apps unless you are in a place where you know you have a suitable and stable internet connection.
To make good quality outbound calls with the app you simply wait until you are in a suitable location with good Wi-Fi or 4G/3G and then dial. Obviously, this is not so easy with inbound calls as you have no control as to when to expect someone to ring you, hence it is far more likely you will get a poor call quality. For this reason, we recommend disabling inbound calls to the app unless you are in a good spot and relying entirely upon the local mobile voice networks to deliver the calls to your handset using the divert options. In fact, if you are on the right plan, UK Unlimited, for example, there is no financial disadvantage to doing this and you can expect to receive as many successful inbound calls from your Virtual Landline as you would on your normal mobile service.
Some Wi-Fi and 4G/3G networks are set up to prevent VOIP calls. This is made evident by either the app being unable to register on our network or in calls that have only one-way audio. In such situations, we recommend calling the service provider and explaining the problem to get them to alter their network settings so as not to interfere with VOIP. If this fails to rectify the problem, please call our customer services team to discuss other options.
Our latest version uses the very latest low bandwidth technology, which helps deliver better quality calls on poorer connections, so the service continues to improve. Stick to the principles outlined above and you should get the best out of your app.
